Patios that do not shift or sink

Most patio failures in Edmonton are about base depth and edge restraint. River Valley Contracting excavates to 200 mm minimum for walkways, 300 mm for patios with furniture loads. Type 1 granular compacted in 100 mm lifts.

Interlocking brick from Techo-Bloc, Belgard or Barkman; natural stone — flagstone, granite setts or local sandstone; or exposed aggregate concrete.

Edges restrained with concealed polymer or steel restraints. Polymeric sand joints lock the surface together once water-activated.

Common questions

How long does a patio installation take?

A typical 30 m² interlocking brick patio is 5 to 7 working days. Larger or natural stone scales up proportionally.

Will weeds grow between the pavers?

Polymeric sand resists weed growth for several years. Routine maintenance is a top-up every 5 to 7 years.

Brick vs stone vs aggregate?

Brick is most cost-effective and widest pattern options. Stone is premium and longest-lasting. Exposed aggregate gives seamless concrete at a mid price.

Can you build steps and seat walls in?

Yes — best designed from the start so falls, footings and materials account for them.

Do I need a development permit?

Not usually for grade-level patios under 30 m². Raised decks and structures over a certain height do require a permit.

What about hot tubs?

Hot tubs need a reinforced sub-base — typically a concrete pad or extra-depth compacted granular. We design the pad as part of the patio.
