Concrete that handles forty cycles a year

Edmonton concrete sees 40 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Standard 25 MPa concrete spalls within a decade. River Valley Contracting pours 32 MPa with 5 to 7% entrained air.

200 mm slab thickness with 15M rebar in 600 mm grid on chairs. 150 mm compacted Type 1 granular base on a geotextile separator over clay.

Control joints sawn within 24 hours of pour to encourage clean cracking at joints. Silane-siloxane sealer at pour and again at 28-day check.

Common questions

Concrete or asphalt — which is better?

Concrete lasts longer (30 to 40 years vs 20 to 25 for asphalt) but costs 30 to 50% more up front.

When can I drive on it?

Walking 24 hours; light vehicles after 7 days; full strength at 28 days. Avoid de-icers the first winter.

Will it crack?

Concrete always cracks as it cures. Correctly spaced control joints choose where. Random cracking means joints were not sawn in time.

Can I get a coloured or stamped finish?

Yes. Integral colour at the truck, or stamped pattern from rubber mats. Adds 25 to 40% to base cost.

How long does the work take?

2 to 3 days from break-out to finishing, plus 28 days before heavy use.

Can I park RVs and trailers?

Standard 200 mm slab handles standard vehicles plus occasional RV. For permanent RV use, recommend a thicker slab.
