Patches that survive next winter

A cold-pour patch survives about one freeze-thaw cycle. A proper saw-cut hot-mix repair lasts as long as the surrounding asphalt — usually a decade or more.

River Valley Contracting saw-cuts the failure area in a clean rectangle, removes damaged asphalt and any compromised base, applies hot tack-coat, places HL3 in 50 mm lifts, compacts each.

Property managers normally bundle multiple potholes into a single visit — lower per-pothole cost than separate trips.

Common questions

When is a pothole worth repairing vs replacing?

Localised failure with sound rest of surface: repair. Multiple connected failures or alligator cracking: mill-and-overlay is better value.

How quickly does the repair set?

Walking immediately. Vehicle same day. Full strength once cool, usually within hours.

Can you patch in winter?

Hot-mix is generally not available below freezing — plants close. Temporary cold-pour can be used and replaced properly in spring.

How long do hot-mix patches last?

As long as the surrounding asphalt — typically 10 to 15 years. Cold-pour measured in months.

Will the patch match my driveway colour?

New asphalt is jet black; existing is grey-brown. Patch will be darker for 1 to 2 summers, then weathers to match.

Will the rest of my driveway fail next?

Not necessarily. A pothole is often a localised failure. River Valley Contracting tells you if we see signs of broader deterioration.
